Chalaph Apartments

The prevalence of homeless veterans is a well documented issue nationwide. Nationally, there are approximately 67,000 homeless veterans. Chalaph Apartments was birthed to help our service men and women regain self-sufficiency.

Chalaph efficiency units have well-appointed kitchens and bathrooms. The manicured grounds include a pond (to retain storm water) and the patio in the rear of the building is a great space for relaxation and outdoor fellowship. Inside, a community room, with bistro tables and the homey living room provide space for sitting and passive recreation. Both rooms are equipped with high definition televisions mounted on walls above TV credenzas and DVRs for watching movies.

Residents are single male and female veterans whose income is at or below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). This veteran’s facility is permanent housing, not a transitional shelter. Our hope is that single veterans, who are currently residing in transitional shelters, will find their way home to Chalaph Apartments.

The Chalaph Veterans Home sits on 1.1 acres of a 5.3 acre site that was transferred to the Joy JEM Community Development Corporation. The goal is to build additional housing for veteran families on the remaining acres, which will be Chalaph II.

Chalaph I was made possible through a grant from the
Wayne County Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE).

A home, not an institution.  Chalaph is a place worthy of the heroes who live here. The professionally landscaped grounds include off-street parking spaces for residents. The 5.3 acre site is surrounded by well-kept homes, schools, churches and businesses, in a neighborhood that welcomes the influence of traditional military values.

If you're interested in applying, please give us a call at (313)530-2404.  We are currently working on phase 2 of Chalaph to provide additional housing to meet the high demand. Click here to help us continue this initiative.

Joy Jem Community Development Corporation is a 501(c)3 organization.
